One of the tips I mentioned in my How To Be Productive Over The Summer blog post was to Get Fit, But Save Money. For me, it’s going pretty good so far! I’m still unemployed (wahh 😦 ), so I have the time to work out most days as well as prepare nice and healthy food. 

I came across an app called Nutracheck which works out how many calories you should be eating per day as well as how many calories you should be burning per day, whether you want to lose weight or maintain your weight.


Because of my lack of income, the workouts I prefer to do are in my own home or garden. At home I have access to a Wii fit and games such as Zumba and Wii sports – all fun, calorie burning workouts. I also love a bit of Davina: Power of 3 DVD! The Nutracheck app has a database full of different exercises and workouts that you can add to your daily diary – they have every work out I could ever think of doing in their database (even sex, which burns 138 kcal in 30 minutes I’ll have you know) so it’s hardly any effort to fill in and keep updated at all. When I’m not sure what workout to do, I flick through the ‘At Home’ workouts to get some ideas – spent a nice (and sweaty) 10 minutes running up and down the stairs this morning and said goodbye to 197 kcal!

The Nutracheck app has just as wide a food database too, with the added option to scan the barcode. (I made sushi the other day and they even had the Tesco Nori Sheets in their scanning database?!) Nutracheck lists all the calories in different servings for you, and even shows you calories in food on the go such as Subway which, I’m not going to lie, is a bit of a punch in the face…!


I’ve loved using this app so far as it really helps me feel like I’m achieving something – being able to see how many calories I’ve burned just on my iPad is so motivating. It has also helped me actually pay attention to how many calories I’m eating per day because it saves me adding everything up and does it for you.  However, a struggle point is when going out for dinner it’s harder to count the calories.

The Nutracheck app is free for a 5 day trial, and if you feel like it’s working for you, you can upgrade for £3.99 to see it til the end of your weight loss journey. If you don’t want to pay, you can still use the app, but with a limited database.

I really recommend this app to students because we all know students are a bit lazy 😉 so an app that works everything out for you, whilst the exact steps to getting in shape are right on your phone or tablet, is kinda perfect!
